Holism, in a sense, is broad and often goes undefined, or better yet misinterpreted. Holistic health is a logical and practical way of life and can be practiced by all, so that the best possible health standards may be achieved. Holism derives from the word ὅλος holos, which is of Greek origin and stands for all, entire, total (Holism, 2009). To further comprehend holistic health, it is important to understand that holistic health practices focus on the physical body and the planet as a whole unit of unique gears and systems that depend on one another, rather than assuming each body part and organism functions alone. Thus, holism as related to health is the idea that an individual’s physical body, mental state, spiritual beliefs and environmental surroundings (to only name a few of the many diverse factors) are all entwined in a perfect web of survival. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, appropriately summed up the overall theory of holism when he stated “The whole is more than the sum of its parts”.

Understanding Holistic Heath Pt. 3: Aristotle was indeed a relevant character, and his famous quote not only appropriately defined holism, it additionally describes the science of philosophy at its simplest form. The controversy surrounding holism in science lies within the argument that holism should not be considered a ‘science’ at all, but a... more coming soon!

Gardening - Introduction

I have always been a city/beach girl, for as far back as I can remember – when I moved to the country (I’m talking about the one flashing traffic light, cows and farms, type of country) I could not quite appreciate the over abundance of bugs, how in two weeks the grass would be up to your knees, or how smoldering the sun was without the breeze on account of the ocean.

Ah, the ocean… a place where you can actually see the sun rise and set without hundreds of pine trees blocking your view…

Well, back to reality. So, here I am: an untrained mother beginning a fun new adventure of the domestic sort. I have been rural for just over a year now, and I can confidently say that the bulk of my existence is spent indoors. Why? Because every time I go outside the gnats swarm to my face and the mosquitoes attack – Ugh. Yes, I am that girl… the girl who does not want to get her nails dirty or sweat if she can help it. But something is gradually changing my perspective. This ‘change’ has his Daddy’s nose and my eyes. Why, oh why, do I now insist on buying only organic food?… using cloth diapers?… and prohibiting antibiotics in my house?... Because my son’s life is absolutely precious to me and these are the decisions I have made in order to give him the best lifestyle as I see fit.

Somewhere along the line I decided it eminent that I begin a garden. Oh boy.

gar•den

Pronunciation: (ˈgär-dən),
—noun: a location where bugs, snakes, humidity and the like congregate.

Okay, so that is not the honest definition; nonetheless, that is my initial view as to what a garden should be defined as. Next, I did what I do best, in my house slippers (anything that can be accomplished in house slippers is great!), I began an online inquiry as to how to begin my own organic garden. Alas, I was not able to find a tutorial for the outdoors apprehensive… or the lady with a baby in tow. Therefore, I decided to wing it – yep, Miss Priss is building a garden all by herself – I have come up with my own rules, and I am going to share each and every step.

If I can do it, anyone can!

Holistic Health - Introduction

“It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has” –Hippocrates (460 BC-370 BC). Indeed, Hippocrates was onto something when he noted that one must first begin to understand oneself prior to determining what may be causing him or her distress. If the term disease is broken down into its two syllables, the term would be viewed as dis-ease, or otherwise meaning the absence of (dis-) comfort (ease). Hippocrates, known as the “father of medicine”, by making this statement, provided people with a brief glimpse into holistic health. When one experiences an absence of comfort, holistic health practices teach us that we must begin curing ourselves mentally, physically and spiritually, so that we might become at ease once again. Understanding holistic health as it relates to holism and understanding the correlation of the innate wisdom of one’s body, mind and spirit, is important for optimal wellbeing.

About The Author

In An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, Gene Kelly’s character quite convincingly describes his love interest, Leslie Caron. Leslie dances away in a beautiful portrayal of a multifaceted, everyday sorta girl. Like Leslie Caron, I wear numerous hats. Some look better on me than others, but it’s still fun to try them all on! I live incessantly and I am wild, simple and beautiful, spiritual, exciting, lusty, sweet & shy, old fashioned, infectious & modern, yacky and moody. A little bit of everything all rolled into one.

It can be difficult to sum up 25 years in a short biography. But it is interesting to look back and mull over the trials and tribulations I have gone through, the extent of how I have changed, the friends I have lost and the companions I have gained… I certainly never expected to wish I could be 12 again, or better yet, wish I had listened to my parents when they said things like ‘save your money’ or ‘do as I say, not as I do’. Because of this I try to live everyday knowing ‘I’m going to miss this’. Not remembering the past or worrying about the future but being present in the moment.

In May of 2008 my husband (and high school sweetheart) and I adopted our puppy Kaya, and in August 2008 we gave birth to our first child. My definitions of love and happiness considerably changed the moment I first saw my son. The first few minutes of his brand new life created a new significance to ‘love at first sight’. I now know how it really feels to love somebody.

I like to think that I can roll with the punches and blend in where needed. I route for Michigan football year after year (not the most exciting thing to mention right now), I’ve been known to kick some butt on Halo 3, I fired my first shotgun when I was 8 months pregnant and I get excited when I see snakes (but I freak out when I see cockroaches). Among the more boring traits, I enjoy reading anything from Harry Potter (yea, I know) to John Grisham. I should be a sales rep for Netflix, I’m their #1 fan. Oh, who started the rumor 'the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach' - I beg to differ! I am in no way a man, and I'd prefer a nice meal over flowers any day! I am terribly allergic to cats… and I prefer dogs over diamonds too.

I am a stay-at-home-mom and presently I am attending college courses online: I will be graduating with an Associates Degree in Communications in July 2010. I love to write and look forward to making a career of it. I am also intrigued with the process of holistic living; perhaps a career within the realm of holistic health and nutrition would be a suitable addition to my studies :D
